China: Typhoon Dolphin's strength wanes after evacuation of nearly one million people and cancellation of hundreds of flights

Typhoon Dolphin brought heavy rains to eastern China, resulting in the cancellation of hundreds of flights and the evacuation of one million people. The typhoon’s intensity had weakened after it made landfall in China twice along the coast of Zhejiang Province, prompting the China Meteorological Administration to downgrade its typhoon warning to the lowest level yesterday. According to China Central Television, the coastal city of Wenzhou in Zhejiang Province relocated more than 900,000 residents to safe areas, with over 1,500 emergency shelters opened in the city. Authorities also evacuated more than 150,000 people in Fujian Province and more than 200,000 in Shanghai, according to the Xinhua News Agency. Additionally, 943 flights were canceled at Shanghai’s two main airports, as announced by airport authorities in an online post. Public transport services, including many local trains, were suspended in the city, which serves as China’s financial hub. Ningbo International Airport in Zhejiang announced that some of its flights may remain delayed or canceled until the “effects of the typhoon have completely dissipated.”
