Hong Kong records highest temperature in approximately 150 years

Hong Kong recorded its highest temperature since records began in 1884 yesterday, with the Hong Kong Observatory in Tsim Sha Tsui, the city’s reference station, registering 36.9 degrees Celsius. The Hong Kong Observatory stated: “The highest temperature recorded at the observatory was 36.9 degrees Celsius, the highest since 1884.” This record is partly attributed to Typhoon Dolphin, which is approaching China’s eastern coast. The Observatory explained that “as Tropical Cyclone Dolphin moves toward the Zhejiang region and inland, the surrounding air mass will continue to bring extremely hot weather to the area from today through Tuesday.” The previous record was set on August 22, 2017, when the temperature reached 36.6 degrees Celsius ahead of the impact of Typhoon Hato. The Hong Kong Observatory derives its weather data from its headquarters in Tsim Sha Tsui. However, the Observatory noted that higher temperatures of 37 degrees Celsius and above were recorded in other areas.
