Claude vs. ChatGPT: Which AI Assistant Suits You Best?

Competition between ChatGPT and Claude is intensifying as tech companies accelerate the race to develop more accurate AI models capable of executing complex tasks. In just a few years, the use of these tools has evolved from simple experiments for answering questions and generating text into integrated platforms increasingly embedded in work, study, programming, file management, and content creation.

ChatGPT was the first large-scale experiment with large language models for millions of users after OpenAI launched it in 2022. It quickly attracted a massive user base, leveraging its early market presence, before Anthropic entered the fray by launching its assistant, Claude, in March 2023.

Since then, the two companies have been engaged in a continuous race to develop models and add new tools and capabilities, to the point where the differences between the two platforms have become less distinct in everyday use. Both can answer questions, summarize documents, write code, produce content, and perform many cognitive tasks. However, differences become more pronounced when moving to professional, specialized, and complex applications.

Tests on accuracy reveal a fiercely close competition between the strongest models from both companies. According to the AA-Omniscience Accuracy standard, Claude Fable 5 (Max) achieved an accuracy rate of 61%, compared to 59% for GPT-5.6 Sol (Max)—a mere two-percentage-point difference that may not be noticeable to the average user.

The equation changes, however, when comparing mid-tier models, where ChatGPT pulls ahead by a wider margin. GPT-5.6 Terra (Max) recorded an accuracy of 46%, compared to 38% for Claude Sonnet 5 (Max). This confirms that the comparison cannot be reduced to declaring one platform absolutely superior; it depends heavily on the specific model used and the nature of the task.

“Hallucination” emerges as one of the most important indicators in evaluating the reliability of AI models, referring to the model fabricating information or incorrect answers when it lacks sufficient knowledge. In this regard, the figures show a clear advantage for Claude. According to the AA-Omniscience Hallucination Rate standard (where a lower percentage is better), Claude Fable 5 recorded a hallucination rate of 55%, compared to 89% for GPT-5.6 Sol.

The gap widens when comparing mid-tier models, with Claude Sonnet 5 showing a hallucination rate of approximately 37%, compared to 85% for GPT-5.6 Terra. The report also notes that GPT-4o, an older model, recorded a hallucination rate of 38%, compared to 89% for GPT-5.6 Sol, reflecting that advancements in models’ general capabilities do not necessarily translate to proportional improvements across all performance metrics.

The competition is not limited to accuracy. Anthropic is striving to strengthen Claude’s position as a tool for work and productivity. According to the Anthropic Economic Index report issued in March 2026, work-related uses accounted for 45% of Claude’s conversations, compared to 42% for personal use, with the remainder distributed among study. Conversely, OpenAI data indicates that 70% of ChatGPT usage is not work-related.

Claude offers a suite of tools that reinforce this direction, most notably Claude Cowork, launched in January 2026 to perform cognitive tasks on behalf of the users and organize files. It also includes Skills, which allow users to create custom instruction bundles, and Artifacts, which enable the display, sharing, and interaction of code, HTML sites, interactive components, diagrams, and graphics.

In contrast, ChatGPT stands out more in direct interaction tools, including natural voice conversations and the ability to interrupt the model while it is speaking while maintaining the conversation context. It also features real-time video usage for instant assistance, as well as capabilities in generating realistic images. These elements give it a strong competitive edge in personal use, content creation, and multi-media interaction.
