Arsenal seals Guimarães deal for $101 million

Arsenal, the English Premier League champions, have finalized the signing of Brazilian international midfielder Bruno Guimarães from Newcastle United on a long-term deal, in a transfer valued at approximately £75 million ($101.2 million).

Arsenal said in a statement yesterday: “We are delighted to announce the arrival of Brazilian international Bruno Guimarães to our squad from Newcastle United on a long-term contract. Bruno joins us after establishing himself as one of the most influential players in the Premier League.”

The club added: “Bruno will wear the number 39 shirt at the club and will immediately join his new teammates. Everyone at Arsenal warmly welcomes Bruno and his family to the club,” before noting that “the deal remains subject to the completion of the required regulatory procedures.”

Guimarães joined Newcastle in January 2022 and played nearly 200 matches over four and a half seasons at St James’ Park, contributing to the team’s victory in the 2025 English League Cup and helping the club qualify for the UEFA Champions League in two consecutive seasons.

The 28-year-old began his professional career in his home country, making his first-team debut for Oudax in São Paulo in 2015, before moving to Atlético Paranaense two years later.

On the international stage, Bruno has earned 48 caps for the Brazilian national team, representing his country at the highest levels of the game. He was part of the squad for the most recent FIFA World Cup, as well as participating in the Copa América and winning a gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games held in summer 2021.

Andrea Berta, Arsenal’s Italian sporting director, said: “Bruno will allow Spanish manager Mikel Arteta to continue developing our style of play, while also increasing competition within the squad, which is essential to maintaining the standards required when our goal is to win major trophies.”
