A recent study published in the scientific journal Nutrients has shown that following a Mediterranean diet can significantly reduce the risk of developing chronic migraine.

Researchers analyzed data from 448 patients suffering from migraine, comparing the dietary habits of those with episodic migraine with those who had chronic migraine.

The results showed that participants who were more adherent to the principles of the Mediterranean diet were three times less likely to develop chronic migraine. This association remained significant even after adjusting for factors such as age, sex, body mass index, disease duration, overuse of painkillers, and other lifestyle factors.

Furthermore, greater adherence to the Mediterranean diet was associated with a lower number of migraine days per month. However, this relationship lost statistical significance after adjusting for other dietary-related factors, while the effect of reducing the risk of transitioning to the chronic form of migraine remained consistent. The researchers also found no clear link between migraine severity and water consumption, sugary soft drinks, or caffeine intake.

The researchers emphasize that a high-quality diet may be an important factor associated with a reduced risk of chronic diseases, and they called for further clinical studies to confirm this relationship. A previous study published in the journal Nutrients also showed that adherence to the Mediterranean diet, the DASH diet, and a high-quality plant-based diet reduces the risk of certain types of cancer in women.
