Music sector moves to establish official classifications for AI-generated works

Prominent figures in the music industry have proposed launching a new classification system aimed at clarifying the nature of musical works in which artificial intelligence is used in their production, a move intended to enhance transparency for audiences and digital streaming platforms. According to the Associated Press (AFP), this initiative is led by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) and the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), alongside the Grammy Awards organization and several independent music organizations.

The proposal includes two main categories: the first, labeled “AI-generated,” is used for works whose production is entirely or largely based on artificial intelligence, including music resulting from text prompts or featuring AI-generated primary vocal performances or core musical elements. The second category, “AI-assisted,” applies to works led by human creators who utilize AI tools in certain stages of production, while the primary musical elements and vocal performances remain executed by people.

The participating entities aim to have these classifications adopted by digital music platforms, distributors, content aggregation companies, and relevant standards bodies. Current data indicate that the “Deezer” platform already applies an automatic classification for AI-generated musical content, while “Spotify” previously launched a verification indicator to suggest that an artist or band is likely human.
