UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs: Targeting commercial navigation and using the Strait of Hormuz as a tool for economic pressure or extortion constitute acts of piracy

The United Arab Emirates has expressed its strong condemnation and outrage over the aggressive Iranian attack that targeted a tanker belonging to ADNOC with a missile as it transited the Strait of Hormuz, with no casualties reported.

In a statement issued by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and carried by the Emirates News Agency (WAM), it was confirmed that this attack constitutes a blatant violation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2817, which emphasizes freedom of navigation and rejects the targeting of commercial vessels or the disruption of international maritime routes. The statement stressed that targeting commercial shipping and using the Strait of Hormuz as a tool for economic pressure or coercion constitute acts of piracy carried out by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, posing a direct threat to the stability of the region and its peoples, as well as to global energy security.

The UAE emphasized the necessity for Iran to halt these aggressive attacks, thereby ensuring its full commitment to ceasing all hostile acts and fully and unconditionally reopening the strait, in order to safeguard regional security and the stability of the global economy and trade.
