Who Will Manage Newcastle?

Newcastle United Football Club has announced the appointment of German coach Matthias Jaissle as the team’s new manager, succeeding Eddie Howe, who departed the role.

Jaissle, 38, a former German international who played for the Under-21 national team, previously managed Saudi Pro League club Al Ahli, leading them to win the AFC Champions League Elite title in consecutive seasons in 2025 and 2026, as well as the 2025 Saudi Super Cup.

Jaissle said: “It is a great honor to become Newcastle’s manager. This is one of the biggest clubs in European football, with a rich history, a distinct identity, and a unique fanbase. I am excited to experience this passion and connection up close.”

He added: “When an offer comes from Newcastle, you stop and take notice. The club’s ambition, its vision for the future, and the opportunity presented are all factors that made this place extremely attractive to me. I have followed the club’s progress closely in recent years, and the progress it has made is evident to everyone.”

Jaissle was forced to end his playing career due to injury at the age of 25. His first managerial role was with Austrian club Liefering, where he led them to second place in the second division, a result that stands as the club’s best-ever achievement, equaling a previous record.

He took charge of Red Bull Salzburg in 2021, guiding them to back-to-back Austrian Bundesliga titles and the Austrian Cup.

He joined Al Ahli in 2023, leading the club to AFC Champions League titles in 2025 and 2026, as well as the 2025 Saudi Super Cup.

Newcastle United CEO David Hopkinson said: “Matthias is one of the most impressive and highly regarded young coaches in world football, and I am very pleased to welcome him to Newcastle.”

Jaissle faces a challenging task, given the success Eddie Howe achieved during his five years at Newcastle in revitalizing a club that had struggled for decades.
