God's mercy is vast

From Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), who said: “A prostitute was forgiven by Allah because, while passing by a panting dog near a well and about to die of thirst, she took off her shoe, tied it with her headscarf, drew water for the dog, and thereby earned forgiveness.”

From this hadith, it is derived that the merciful are shown mercy by the Most Merciful, and that gentleness and compassion are not exclusive to humans but extend to all living beings. Providing water is among the greatest acts of worship. It also serves as a warning against mistreating animals. Furthermore, the hadith illustrates that Allah, exalted be He, may forgive a major sin through a minor good deed, by His grace.
