The Iraqi Invasion and Iranian Betrayal
We are currently marking the thirty-sixth anniversary of the Iraqi invasion, amid sensitive conditions in the Gulf region, characterized by the ongoing brutal Iranian aggression against the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states and Jordan, which has persisted since February 28 of last year. The treacherous Iraqi aggression against Kuwait on August 2, 1990, toppled all established norms, principles, and moral constants, and sowed distrust among Arabs who were already on the brink of disaster. Its consequences for the Arab and Islamic nations were dire.
Due to the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait, the Arab and Islamic nations regressed. The invasion also facilitated attempts to sideline the Palestinian cause through the 1991 Madrid Peace Conference, and led to the signing of the Oslo Accords.
Confronting the Iraqi invasion taught us valuable lessons about the importance of solidarity and national unity. It demonstrated that the people of Kuwait are one united body, astonishing the world with their steadfast stance against this odious occupation and their unwavering allegiance to the esteemed Al Sabah ruling family during the most difficult times.
The Iraqi invasion cannot be erased from the memory of those who lived through it. They must pass on the lessons of this critical period: how the people of Kuwait endured, and how the Kuwaiti government never abandoned its citizens, both within and outside the country. We must teach our children that our strategic and moral depth lies in our unity, embodied by the GCC states. We must highlight how the GCC countries stood firm, and remind them of who stood with us, who stood against us, who rejoiced in our suffering, and how they received their due from God, the Exalted.
Glory be to God; it seems history is repeating itself. Iranian missiles and their tails are resuming the role played by the late Saddam Hussein, upon whom God’s retribution is deserved. We have returned united as GCC states. The treacherous state of Iran must understand that every GCC country is a red line. Iran must realize that its attacks on the GCC states will not go unpunished.
The brutal Iranian aggression will plunge the region into the crucible of regional politics, potentially leading to catastrophic consequences for Iran and its people. They must learn from the past.
Those who follow in Iran’s footsteps must reconsider their calculations. With God’s will, we are the victors through our unity and shared destiny.
May God protect Kuwait, its people, and the GCC states.
