UEFA Clings to Boycott of World Cup Tournaments

UEFA, the Union of European Football Associations, is sticking to its decision to boycott competitions organized by its counterpart, FIFA, the International Federation of Association Football, including the World Cup, despite FIFA’s reversal of its plan to open the World Cup to foreign investors. UEFA clarified in a statement: “UEFA member associations have been very clear about the conditions linked to their non-participation in FIFA competitions.” Alongside the withdrawal of the “Project FIFA” proposal—a demand that has been met—UEFA is calling for “guarantees that such attempts to undermine football in this manner will not be repeated.” UEFA emphasized that “these conditions have not yet been met,” and reiterated its “loss of confidence in Gianni Infantino’s presidency.”
