Death of Uganda National Team Coach

Ugandan police said David Orei, a player for the Uganda national team and captain of one of the country’s largest football clubs, died after being assaulted in the capital, Kampala. Police spokesperson Rachel Kawala said Orei, 28, captain of SC Villa, was seriously injured by unknown assailants who attacked him in a suburb of Kampala. Kawala said passersby found him unconscious and took him to a nearby hospital before transferring him to another hospital, where his death was later confirmed. The Uganda Football Association said in a statement: “David was not just a player; he was a leader and an inspiration to an entire generation. He led SC Villa with courage, humility, and passion. In the Uganda national team jersey, he carried the hopes of an entire nation.” Orei’s death follows the death of another prominent sports figure last June. According to police, rugby player Sydney Jongodiu died after being assaulted in Kampala.
