New Discovery of Magnesium's Impact on Muscle Mass and Strength

A study published in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition has shown that increased magnesium intake may be associated with a reduced risk of age-related loss of muscle mass and strength. Researchers analyzed data from 3,830 South Korean participants aged 50 and older, dividing them into groups according to their dietary magnesium intake. The scientists also assessed consumption of magnesium-rich foods, such as whole grains, nuts, legumes, leafy green vegetables, seaweed, and soy milk.

The results showed that individuals who consumed higher amounts of magnesium were 53% less likely to develop sarcopenia, a condition characterized by the loss of muscle mass and strength with aging, compared to those with lower intake. Additionally, a diet rich in magnesium-containing foods was associated with an approximately 50% lower risk of sarcopenia, and this association remained significant even after adjusting for other factors such as age, physical activity level, body weight, protein intake, and total caloric intake.

Scientists suggest that magnesium may help maintain muscle health by reducing chronic inflammation. The study found that participants with higher magnesium intake had lower levels of C-reactive protein, an important indicator of inflammation in the body.

Health experts note that magnesium plays a role in many bodily functions and may help alleviate muscle cramps and pain. Some magnesium supplements may also improve sleep quality. However, doctors emphasize the importance of consulting a physician or registered dietitian and undergoing appropriate tests before taking magnesium supplements, as excessive intake can lead to undesirable side effects.
