Guatemala raises alert level to 'Red' and evacuates hundreds of residents after the eruption of Fuego volcano

Guatemalan authorities raised the alert level to red and evacuated 659 people from eight villages following the eruption of Volcán de Fuego, one of the most active volcanoes in Central America, as monitoring of volcanic activity continues. The eruption produced lava flows and pyroclastic flows on the volcano’s slopes, prompting authorities to implement precautionary measures to protect residents in nearby areas. The state of maximum alert remained in effect on Tuesday, with emergency teams and relevant agencies monitoring field conditions and assessing potential risks amid ongoing volcanic activity.

Pyroclastic flows are among the most dangerous phenomena associated with volcanic eruptions, consisting of hot gases, ash, and rocks that move at high speeds down slopes. Authorities continue to closely monitor the volcano and remain prepared to take additional measures if necessary, in order to safeguard the population and mitigate risks arising from the continued eruption.
