Japanese study: Design of neighborhoods and green spaces may contribute to improving sleep quality

A recent study has revealed that the design of residential neighborhoods can have a significant impact on sleep quality and duration. Areas featuring more green spaces and streets with visual enclosure provided by trees or buildings were associated with longer sleep periods and a greater sense of security. The study’s findings were published by Euronews, which reported that researchers from Osaka Metropolitan University in Japan conducted the research on more than 1,000 working adults in Tokyo. They employed artificial intelligence techniques to analyze over 200,000 images from Google Street View, then compared neighborhood characteristics with sleep data provided by participants. The results showed that greener, more organized urban environments were linked to reduced insomnia symptoms and improved sleep duration, whereas some neighborhoods with designs more conducive to walking recorded lower levels of perceived safety and shorter sleep durations. Researchers believe these findings enhance the understanding of the relationship between urban planning and public health, and may help guide future city design to support residents’ well-being and improve their quality of life.
