Alkmaar Wins Dutch Super Cup

AZ Alkmaar, a side from the Dutch Eredivisie, thrashed their opponents PSV Eindhoven, who played with ten men, to claim the local Super Cup (Johan Cruyff Shield) by defeating them 4-0 in the opening match of the season in the Netherlands, which is contested between the previous season’s league and cup champions.

Javi Verman was sent off just nine minutes into the game after striking AZ’s Myron Boadu in the face, putting the league champions under pressure at home and giving AZ an advantage they quickly exploited.

Boadu, with a bandage on the side of his face, scored the opening goal with a header in the 25th minute, before Wesley Hoedt, Ilya Cysique, and Ro-Zan Zeeuw added three more goals within 15 minutes in the second half.

AZ, last season’s KNVB Cup winners, claimed the Super Cup title for the first time since 2010, while PSV Eindhoven secured their fourth title in the last five editions of the competition, which serves as the curtain-raiser for the season.
