Drought reduces electricity generation in Serbia; Danube River hits record low level

The sharp drop in the Danube River’s water levels, caused by a drought and rising temperatures, has led to a significant decline in hydropower generation in Serbia, amid official warnings of continued pressure on the energy sector. The Serbian Minister of Energy announced that two power plants, which account for about 18% of the country’s annual electricity production, are currently operating at a reduced capacity due to water flows reaching historic lows.

Authorities have urged citizens to conserve electricity as the region experiences increased energy demand driven by a new heatwave. Reports also indicate that reduced rainfall is affecting electricity production in neighboring countries such as Romania and Bulgaria. Meanwhile, the low water levels of the Danube in northern Serbia have disrupted the operation of pumps that supply irrigation canals, potentially impacting the agricultural sector. These developments occur as widespread parts of Europe continue to endure drought and heatwaves.
