Why do we catch colds in the summer?
Many people suffer from colds and viral infections even during the summer and in hot weather. Sudden transitions between different temperature ranges are among the most prominent causes of summer colds. When a person moves from an ambient temperature of 35°C to an air-conditioned room set at 18–20°C, the body is forced to adapt rapidly. Although cold air does not directly cause viral infections, it can weaken the defenses of the nasal and throat mucous membranes, facilitating the entry of viruses into the body.
The same effect can occur when consuming very cold beverages in hot weather, swimming for extended periods in cold water after exposure to high temperatures, or being subjected to strong, direct blasts of air-conditioned air, which may lead to a drop in body temperature. It is worth noting that air conditioners are not a source of viruses, provided they are regularly maintained. However, if their filters are dirty, they can become sources of dust, allergens, and certain microorganisms. Moreover, the dry air pumped out by air conditioners can dry out the respiratory tract’s mucous membranes, increasing susceptibility to respiratory viral infections.
Several health experts point out that prolonged exposure to high temperatures can negatively affect cardiovascular health, which in turn may impair immune system efficiency and increase susceptibility to illnesses and viral infections. Source: Lenta.ru
