Rare Fossil Redraws History of Marine Predators 180 Million Years Ago

A research team has uncovered an exceptional fossil of a giant marine reptile that lived approximately 180 million years ago, which may help expand scientists’ understanding of how ancient marine organisms adapted to injuries and harsh environmental conditions.

According to a study published in the scientific journal Lethaia, which specializes in earth sciences and paleontology, the fossil was discovered in the German state of Bavaria and belongs to an individual of the genus Temnodontosaurus, one of the largest ichthyosaurs that lived during the Early Jurassic period.

The study indicates that the creature measured about 6.6 meters in length. The fossil preserved large portions of its skeleton, including more than 100 teeth, as well as rare gastroliths believed to have aided in food processing within the digestive tract. Researchers also identified signs of injuries to the jaw and shoulder, suggesting that the animal managed to survive and adapt despite injuries that may have impaired its hunting abilities.

Researchers believe this discovery provides new insights into the behavior and evolution of giant ichthyosaurs, and suggests that this genus may have persisted longer than previously thought, potentially prompting a reassessment of the history of marine ecosystems during the Jurassic period.
