Dr. Salem Al-Shamari: Presenting an integrated system of cultural and artistic activities and programs to provide a university environment that fosters creativity and innovation
The acting dean of student affairs at Kuwait University, Dr. Salem Al-Shammari, affirmed that cultural activities are an integral part of the university experience, contributing to students’ integration into the campus environment and strengthening their sense of belonging to the university. He noted that these activities also play a vital role in discovering talents, developing skills, and forging a shared university identity among students.
In an interview with KUNA, Al-Shammari explained that Kuwait University places special emphasis on cultural and artistic activities. Within the Deanship of Student Affairs, a specialized department has been established to oversee this sector, comprising multiple divisions covering cultural, artistic, theatrical, and literary activities. The deanship ensures coverage of activities across the university’s 16 colleges through diverse programs and projects, supported by an annual budget.
He added that the university strives to provide a safe and motivating environment for students, particularly freshmen, by offering opportunities to engage in activities that align with their interests and hobbies. This approach helps build positive social relationships and enhances their sense of belonging to university life.
Al-Shammari noted that cultural activities encompass various fields, including theater, poetry, visual arts, drawing, and art exhibitions, as well as initiatives related to innovation and cybersecurity. This reflects the university’s commitment to keeping pace with students’ interests and providing diverse platforms to showcase their talents.
He highlighted that theatrical activities are among the most prominent areas of interest for the university, which has achieved notable success at the Gulf level by winning awards for best theatrical script and best theatrical participation. The university is also preparing to participate in a theatrical event at the Arab world level in Tunisia next August.
Al-Shammari pointed out that the university annually organizes the “Peoples’ Forum,” aimed at introducing students to different civilizations and cultures and promoting cultural openness. Additionally, the Talent and Innovation Exhibition, launched about three years ago, attracts an increasing number of talented students across various fields each year.
He stated that the deanship continuously works to develop this exhibition by diversifying its fields, expanding the participant base, and fostering a spirit of competition and creativity. These efforts contribute to discovering and refining students’ potential, providing them with opportunities to shine.
He emphasized that cultural activities directly enhance students’ self-confidence and help them showcase their talents within the educational institution. Meanwhile, the university has observed growing student interest in participating in art exhibitions and creative activities, which positively impacts their personalities and academic performance.
Al-Shammari noted that student and specialized clubs play a crucial role in transferring knowledge among students from different academic years. They allow freshmen to benefit from the experiences of more senior peers and strengthen values of volunteerism and teamwork.
He pointed out that the university’s move to the Sabah Al-Salem University City has contributed to greater integration among colleges and increased interaction among students. Previously, activities were concentrated within individual colleges. Now, having all colleges in one location has provided broader opportunities to organize events and attract diverse student groups to participate.
He clarified that the university has specialized facilities to support cultural activities, most notably the Cultural Center, which is considered one of the most important centers in Kuwait. It hosts various exhibitions and events throughout the year, alongside the Conference Center, which serves as a comprehensive platform for hosting various activities and programs.
Regarding the main challenges, Al-Shammari stated that the greatest challenge lies in presenting innovative and renewed ideas and programs each year, and providing a creative environment that aligns with students’ aspirations and future interests. The university continuously develops its programs and activities to meet students’ needs.
He mentioned that the university continues to expand its external participation and enhance cultural exchange. It is preparing to participate in Tunisia at the Arab world level in the field of theatrical activities, and a visit to China is planned to strengthen cultural exchange. Additionally, the university hosts students from Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) universities to familiarize them with Kuwait’s university and cultural environment.
He noted that the student exchange program is not limited to academic aspects but also carries an important cultural dimension, allowing students to experience different educational systems and cultures. He affirmed the university’s commitment to expanding participation in this program in the coming years.
Al-Shammari stated that the Deanship of Student Affairs has submitted its annual plan for cultural activities for next year, aiming to integrate it with the plans of public relations and various colleges. This will result in a unified calendar that allows all university students to view, access, and participate in events and activities from the beginning of the academic year.
