Europe invests 30 billion euros to compensate for its lag in artificial intelligence

The European Commission launched a massive tender yesterday aimed at offsetting its lag in the artificial intelligence race, through investments worth 30 billion euros (approximately $34 billion) to build Europe’s first “AI supercomputing factories,” thereby providing massive computing capabilities. Henna Virkkunen, the European Commission Vice-President responsible for digital affairs, stated that launching this initiative “represents a key step in our ambition” to make Europe “a continent for artificial intelligence,” adding that possessing such vast data-processing capacity constitutes a “strategic necessity.”
