Egyptian Team Wins World Fencing Bronze

The crowning of Egypt’s men’s sabre fencing team with the bronze medal at the World Championships currently being held in Hong Kong has drawn widespread praise from sports officials and fans, following a historic achievement that returned the “Pharaohs” to the global podium in team events for the first time in 75 years.

The Egyptian squad, comprising Mohamed El-Sayed, Youssef Shams, Mahmoud Mohsen, and Mahmoud El-Sayed, secured third place after a thrilling 39-38 victory over the Israeli national team, in one of the strongest matches of the tournament.

The Egyptian Fencing Federation expressed its pride in the players’ accomplishments, posting a photo of the team champions on its official page with the comment: “All respect and appreciation to the team champions. Congratulations to Egypt, congratulations to our champions, and may you achieve more successes and titles in your upcoming journey. We are proud of you, champions. You have raised Egypt’s name high.”

For his part, Tarek Al-Husseini, president of the Egyptian Fencing Federation, affirmed that the bronze medal represents an exceptional achievement, restoring the Egyptian team to the global podium after a 75-year absence. He noted that the players delivered a great championship and deservedly earned this accomplishment.

Al-Husseini explained that the match against Israel was not an ordinary game but rather a “real battle,” especially given the significant physical and mental exertion the players had endured in previous rounds against top-tier international teams, including Spain and Russia. Both of those matches extended to the final touch (45 touches), causing considerable fatigue among the Egyptian squad members.

He added that he made a special effort to motivate the players before the third-place match, conveying a message through captain Sayed Samy, who emphasized that the match was a defense of Egypt’s name. Al-Husseini confirmed that the players responded to the message and delivered a heroic performance, ultimately securing the victory by a single touch.
