A bouquet of flowers can turn from a source of joy into a real nightmare for people with allergies. The risks are not limited to wild weeds but also include common flowers sold in most stores, such as lilies, chamomile, and chrysanthemums. The main cause of allergies is not the flower itself, but the pollen it carries. Plants with fine and light pollen are the most dangerous, as they spread easily through the air and reach the respiratory system, causing sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, and coughing, and in some cases, they can trigger asthma attacks.

Cut flowers continue to release pollen and volatile aromatic compounds, and their concentration increases in enclosed spaces over time, which can worsen allergy symptoms. Attention should also be paid to the vases holding the flowers, as failing to change the water regularly allows mold to grow; its spores are potent allergens that can intensify symptoms.

Doctors advise allergy sufferers to avoid bouquets containing lilies, chamomile, chrysanthemums, ornamental sunflowers, and wild weeds, as well as bouquets with large amounts of leafy plants, wheat-like spikes, and dried flowers, as these often carry significant amounts of dust and pollen.

It is worth noting that no flowers are completely free of allergens, but some species are relatively safer, such as roses, orchids, tulips, and mildly scented carnations, because their pollen grains are large or sticky and do not spread easily throughout a room.
