Recent Study Upends Conventional Understanding of Body Fat Accumulation

A new study conducted by researchers at the University of Michigan has shown that fat accumulation in the body is not the sole cause of metabolic disorders; rather, the loss of certain types of fat can also lead to serious metabolic diseases. Medical Xpress reported that this study reshapes the prevailing view on the harms of body fat accumulation, demonstrating that the loss of specific fat types can result in severe conditions, including diabetes and fatty liver disease.

The researchers focused on a rare genetic disorder known as familial partial lipodystrophy type 2 (FPLD2), in which patients gradually lose their subcutaneous fat layer until it disappears entirely. Paradoxically, patients diagnosed with this condition, despite their fat loss, were found to suffer from fatty liver disease, insulin resistance, and other serious metabolic disturbances—a finding that appears contradictory to conventional medical logic.

Professor Elif Oral, a co-author of the study, commented: “Type 2 diabetes has always been viewed as a dysfunction of pancreatic beta cells, but the reality is that its health is closely linked to the condition of adipose cells. The loss of healthy adipose tissue can be just as dangerous as its excess, and this discovery offers a new perspective for understanding the nature of metabolic disorders.”
