Ministry of Islamic Affairs: Registration opens for Imam, Preacher, and Muazzan recruitment exams starting August 3
Kuwait officials: The Ministry of Islamic Affairs has announced the opening of registration for the written examination to fill positions of Imam, Imam and Preacher, and Imam and Muazzin for Kuwaiti citizens. The registration period runs from August 3 to September 30 of next year, or until the required number of candidates is filled. The written examination will be held on October 6, 2026.
The Ministry clarified that applicants for the positions of Imam and Imam and Preacher must be Kuwaiti nationals, at least 21 years old, and hold the required academic qualification. They must have memorized the required portion of the Holy Quran according to their qualification, in addition to mastering the rules of Tajweed and recitation. Qualifications issued from outside the State of Kuwait must be accredited by the relevant government authorities.
The Ministry stated that holders of university degrees in Sharia (Islamic studies) are required to have memorized five juz (parts) of the Quran, including juz “Amma.” Holders of non-Sharia university degrees must have memorized ten juz. Those with a high school diploma or its equivalent, or a certificate from a Quran House, must have memorized the entire Quran and mastered the rules of Tajweed.
Regarding the position of Muazzin (caller to prayer), applicants must be Kuwaiti nationals, hold a certificate of at least high school level or a diploma from a religious institute or its equivalent, or a certificate from a Quran House. They must have memorized three juz of the Quran, including juz “Amma,” be at least 18 years old, and demonstrate proficiency in Tajweed rules and good performance.
The Ministry added that changing the job title from Muazzin to Imam requires the employee to have served at least 15 years in the position of Muazzin, have memorized at least 15 juz of the Quran, and meet all other stipulated conditions.
The Ministry emphasized that all applicants must successfully pass the written examination and the oral interview. They must be known for good conduct and moderation, and must not have been convicted of crimes involving moral turpitude or breach of trust. Additionally, they must prove sound creed, clear speech, intact senses, good voice, and appropriate appearance before the interview committee. However, holders of a PhD in Sharia sciences are exempt from the written exam and are assessed solely through the oral interview.
The Ministry urged interested applicants to complete the required documents, which include a curriculum vitae, a copy of the academic qualification, the civil ID, and a work ID or proof of retirement, along with any other documents depending on the applicant’s status.
Registration takes place at the Technical Affairs Department of the Mosques Sector in Al-Raqai area, at the Imams and Muazzins Training Building, Ground Floor, during official working hours from 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM. Applicants must bring copies of all required documents.
