Is there a link between high consumption of eggs and meat and heart disease?

In a notable scientific development, a recent study has revealed an unexpected link between certain common foods and a serious heart rhythm disorder, opening the door to a new understanding of the relationship between gut health and heart health. According to the study, consuming foods such as egg yolks and beef may be associated with an increased risk of atrial fibrillation, a heart rhythm disorder that is one of the leading causes of stroke and heart failure.

Researchers attribute this link to a chemical compound known as trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), which is produced in the gut as a result of digesting certain nutrients. Carnitine and choline, found in high amounts in egg yolks, beef, and liver, stimulate gut bacteria to produce this compound, which then enters the bloodstream and may affect heart function.

To test this hypothesis, researchers from the US-based Cleveland Clinic analyzed blood samples from more than 5,000 participants in the United States. After adjusting for other risk factors such as advanced age, high blood pressure, and obesity, they found that individuals with the highest levels of TMAO in their blood were 70% more likely to develop atrial fibrillation compared to those with lower levels, suggesting that this compound may represent an independent risk factor.

Dr. Robert Queth, an electrophysiologist at the Cleveland Clinic and the study’s lead author, said: “Most current treatments focus on managing atrial fibrillation after it appears, but our results suggest the possibility of early intervention through dietary modifications.”

The researchers added that these findings strengthen growing evidence of the pivotal role of the gut microbiome in cardiovascular health and may pave the way for new preventive strategies targeting gut bacteria.
