Foods That Calm the Nervous System and Boost Immunity
Food is a powerful tool for combating stress, as it affects the brain, cortisol levels, immunity, and nervous system recovery. The digestive system produces about 90% of serotonin, the neurotransmitter responsible for feelings of calm and improved mood. According to doctors, rapidly absorbed carbohydrates provide the body with an immediate energy boost and raise dopamine levels, but blood sugar then drops quickly, which can lead to episodes of anxiety, irritability, and fatigue about an hour after eating. Doctors warn that strict diets or irregular meals deprive the brain of a steady glucose level, prompting it to activate the hunger response as a threat, which may manifest as increased anxiety.
Foods that may help counter stress include fatty fish, dark chocolate (20–30 grams daily with a cocoa content of at least 75%), buckwheat, slow-cooked oats, nuts and seeds, eggs, leafy and cruciferous vegetables, bananas, and turmeric.
Conversely, fast food, trans fats, and processed meats contribute to worsening chronic inflammation in the body. The higher the inflammation markers, the greater the risk of developing depression and anxiety disorders. It is advisable to avoid excessive consumption of caffeine, energy drinks, and sugary soft drinks, as well as hidden sugars found in certain sauces, low-fat yogurts, and canned juices, especially during periods of intense stress.
