Kuwaiti national sentenced to 15 years in prison for shoplifting in Deynān

The Second Chamber of the Court of Appeal, presided over by Advisor Nasr Salem Al Haid and with the membership of Advisors Mutaab Al-Araddi and Saud Al-Sanaa, upheld the verdict issued by the Criminal Court sentencing a citizen to 15 years’ imprisonment with hard labor. This decision came after he was convicted of causing the death of a grocery store clerk in the Mutlaa area while fleeing without paying for purchases worth two dinars.

The Public Prosecution had charged the accused with intentional homicide, stating that he assaulted the victim by beating him after the victim demanded payment for the goods. The accused then trapped the victim’s hand in the car window and drove off, dragging him for approximately 30 meters before opening the window, which caused the victim to fall to the ground and sustain injuries that led to his death. He was also accused of stealing personal property from the victim using violence.

A witness to the incident, who was a friend of the victim, stated that he saw the accused throw three punches at the clerk’s face after being asked to pay for the purchases. The accused then trapped the victim’s hand in the car window and drove away, dragging him for about 30 meters before releasing his hand by opening the window. The victim fell to the ground, succumbing to his injuries, while the accused fled the scene.

Investigations by the officer in charge of the case revealed that the accused stopped his four-wheel-drive vehicle in front of the grocery store and requested supplies worth two dinars. As soon as he received them, he attempted to flee without paying. The victim clung to the vehicle to prevent him from escaping, but the accused continued driving at high speed and in a zigzag pattern, causing the victim to fall to the ground and die from his injuries.
