Facebook Launches Free Verification Badge for User Authentication

Meta announced the launch of a new free verification badge on Facebook called “Verified from Facebook,” aimed at confirming that an account belongs to a real person. This initiative is part of the company’s efforts to curb fake accounts and impersonation, particularly as content generated using artificial intelligence technologies continues to rise.

In a blog post, Meta explained that users can obtain the badge by recording a short selfie video. The system compares the video with the profile picture to verify identity within minutes, without requiring any paid subscription. The feature is being rolled out gradually in select markets before expanding globally.

According to the company, applicants must be at least 18 years old and their accounts must comply with Facebook’s policies on fraud and misleading behavior. The current phase does not include Pages or ProMode accounts.

Meta noted that the badge will appear in several services that require a higher level of trust among users, groups, and profiles, with plans to expand its visibility to home feed posts in the future.
