Sofou Center Wins Regional Award for Energy Innovation and Sustainability 2026

The “Sawf” Wool Spinning Center, initiated by the Sadu Artisans Association and developed through a strategic partnership between the association, the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS), and Al-Naqil wa Tijarat Al-Mawashi Company, has won the “Innovative Energy Project of 2026” award granted by the American Society of Energy Engineers (AEE) at the regional level for the Middle East and North Africa. The award recognizes the center’s excellence in applying innovative solutions in the fields of energy efficiency and sustainability.

In a press statement, KFAS noted that the “Sawf” Wool Spinning Center is the first sustainable wool processing factory in Kuwait. It is the result of a strategic national partnership among KFAS, the Sadu Artisans Association, and Al-Naqil wa Tijarat Al-Mawashi Company, aimed at developing the local wool industry, adding value to this natural resource, and promoting the concepts of sustainability and the circular economy in national projects.

The foundation added that the project idea originated from the Sadu Artisans Association’s initiative to utilize underused local wool and revive the traditional craft of wool spinning. KFAS embraced the idea and funded a research project implemented by the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research to study the feasibility of producing, processing, and improving the quality of wool from local Naimi sheep, as well as its use in artisanal industries.

The project’s results demonstrated the technical and economic viability of this industry, contributing to the establishment of the center as a successful model for transforming scientific research outcomes into a sustainable industrial project.

The impact of the “Sawf” Center extends across social, economic, and environmental dimensions. It contributes to reviving the craft of wool spinning and weaving by providing high-quality local wool used to train community members and preserve this heritage craft. The center also adds value to animal production by professionally utilizing local wool, which was previously underused or exported at low economic value, thereby enhancing the economic viability of livestock farming in Kuwait.

By using clean energy sources, recycling water, and utilizing production waste to manufacture soil-enhancing fertilizer, the project embodies the principles of the circular economy, thereby improving resource efficiency and reducing environmental impact.

The American Society of Energy Engineers’ awards are among the most prominent specialized awards in the energy sector, given annually to honor individuals, institutions, and projects that achieve outstanding accomplishments in energy efficiency, sustainability, and innovation. The “Sawf” Center’s win underscores the ability of Kuwaiti projects based on scientific research and national partnerships to compete and excel at both regional and international levels.
