Severe forest fires sweep through southern Europe, forcing the evacuation of thousands

Severe wildfires, fueled by strong winds and high temperatures, continue to ravage several areas across southern Europe, particularly in Italy, Spain, and France, where authorities were forced yesterday to evacuate thousands more people from a tourist region. In southwestern France, firefighters battled two major blazes, one of which consumed more than 2,000 hectares north of the Arcachon Basin in Gironde, a popular tourist area near Bordeaux, with no reported casualties. In Italy, Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi announced the death of a firefighter while battling the flames in the south, where dozens of fires are engulfing forests and vegetation in Sicily, driven by hot winds. The largest wildfire, located about 100 kilometers north of the Spanish capital Madrid in the province of Guadalajara, had burned 32,000 hectares since the previous Thursday.
