A Black Strip from the Prophet (peace be upon him)

Ibn Hisham, Ibn Kathir, and others narrated: “The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was arranging the ranks of his companions on the day of Badr, holding a cup (arrow) with which he straightened the lines. When Suwad ibn Ghaziyyah, a client of the Banu ‘Adi ibn al-Najjar, passed by, he was standing ahead of the line. The Prophet struck him in the stomach with the cup and said, ‘Stand straight, O Suwad.’ Suwad replied, ‘O Messenger of Allah! You have hurt me. Allah sent you with truth and justice, so let me exact retribution for myself.’ The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) uncovered his stomach and said, ‘Exact retribution.’ Suwad embraced him and kissed his stomach. The Prophet asked, ‘What brought you to this, O Suwad?’ Suwad said, ‘O Messenger of Allah! I witnessed what you see, and I wished that the last thing to touch my skin before my death would be your skin.’ The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) prayed for him with goodness and said to him, ‘Stand straight, O Suwad!’ This narration is classified as sound by Al-Albani. The Prophet (peace be upon him) did not hesitate to grant Suwad his right to retribution when he demanded it, even though the Prophet (peace be upon him) had not intended to harm or hurt him. Thus, the Prophet (peace be upon him) set a remarkable example of justice and the right to retribution.”
