"Transitional Justice": Sentencing of accused Wissam al-Assad to be delivered at the end of this month

Radeef Mustafa, a member of the National Commission for Transitional Justice and Director of the Accountability and Justice Administration, stated that the transition of the trial procedures against the accused Waseem al-Assad to the stage of final arguments marks an important milestone in the path of transitional justice, with a verdict expected to be delivered on the 29th of the current month.

He added that the public prosecution’s submissions were presented based on the evidence, statements, and testimonies contained in the case file, while the defense presented its arguments and the accused delivered his final statements before the court.

Mustafa emphasized that this stage of the trial demonstrates that transitional justice in Syria is being implemented in accordance with judicial procedures that safeguard the rights of all parties, relying on evidence and legal guarantees, thereby enhancing confidence in the rule of law and judicial independence.

He clarified that this trial reflects the state’s commitment to the principle of non-impunity, and that serious crimes are adjudicated before the competent judiciary in accordance with legal procedures, free from any other considerations, ensuring the achievement of justice and redress for victims.

He noted that the Accountability and Justice Administration continues to support judicial processes by monitoring files involving serious violations and providing necessary technical and legal support within its mandate, contributing to consolidating justice and holding accountable all those whose responsibility is established before the courts, thereby strengthening citizens’ trust in justice institutions.

It is worth noting that the Fourth Criminal Court convened yesterday at the Justice Palace in Damascus for the third session of the trial of the accused Waseem al-Assad, in the presence of representatives from national and international human rights organizations.
