TikTok Tests New Tool to Detect Deepfakes and Protect Content Creators

TikTok has begun testing a new artificial intelligence-powered tool aimed at helping content creators detect fake videos and images that use their faces or likenesses without permission, as part of its efforts to curb the spread of deepfake content. According to TechCrunch, TikTok started testing the tool with a limited number of content creators in the United States, allowing users who complete identity verification to report content suspected of being generated using AI and impersonating their images or likenesses. The site explained that the verification process relies on the Jumio platform, which involves capturing a live selfie and scanning an identity document, while TikTok confirmed that it does not retain copies of users’ documents. After verification is completed, the platform begins searching for content that may include images or likenesses of the account holder. When potential matches are found, users can review the videos or images and report posts or accounts they believe are impersonating them. TikTok emphasized that the feature is optional and remains in the testing phase, noting that the results of this phase will determine whether it will be expanded to a larger number of content creators in the future. This move comes amid growing use of AI technologies to produce fake content that mimics real people, alongside efforts by social media platforms to strengthen digital identity protection and limit the misuse of personal images and videos.
