Innovation of 60 complete languages from scratch with unprecedented features

A team of researchers has succeeded in developing an artificial intelligence-based tool capable of inventing entirely new languages, including vocabulary, grammar, and communication patterns, in a move that could expand the horizons of linguistic research and creative applications.

In this context, Digital Trends reported that the tool, named Conlang Crafter, is part of a study published in the Proceedings of the Association for Computational Linguistics. It relies on large language models to create fully integrated artificial languages from scratch. Led by Morris Albright, and in collaboration with Moran Yonoka, Raja Jeries, and Gashper Bigosh, the researchers developed more than 60 new languages, making the project’s source code available to researchers and developers.

The tool allows users to specify the desired characteristics of a language, after which it automatically builds its vocabulary and grammar and reviews its outputs to ensure consistency.

The study team believes this technology could be used to support the production of literary and cinematic works that require fictional languages, as well as contribute to the study of endangered languages and the understanding of language evolution over time, thereby providing researchers with a new tool to explore linguistic diversity in innovative ways.
