American University of Kuwait becomes first educational institution in Kuwait to receive nomination from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education
The American University in Kuwait (AIK) announced that it has been granted Candidate for Accreditation Status by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE), with the decision dated March 12, 2026, and officially announced by the commission on March 23, 2026. The MSCHE is one of the institutional accreditation bodies recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, overseeing the accreditation of more than 500 higher education institutions in the United States and other countries, including prestigious universities such as Princeton University, Johns Hopkins University, Georgetown University, and the American University of Beirut.
AIK’s candidacy for accreditation embodies its firm commitment to the highest standards of quality and academic excellence, confirming that its educational system aligns with internationally recognized standards. It also represents a pivotal step on the path to achieving full institutional accreditation. This achievement provides greater confidence to students, parents, and employers regarding the quality of education provided by the university and its academic outcomes.
This milestone follows a comprehensive evaluation conducted by a team of academic reviewers from MSCHE during November 2025. The university met all seven accreditation standards without any mandatory requirements, achieving the highest possible rating at this stage. Additionally, the university received four official commendations for its institutional transparency, collaborative work culture, quality of general education programs, and excellence in student support services.
With this achievement, the American University in Kuwait has become the first higher education institution in the State of Kuwait to receive candidacy status from MSCHE, joining an elite group of only 16 educational institutions outside the United States affiliated with the commission. It is also the first new academic institution in the Middle East to attain this status in over two decades, joining distinguished regional institutions such as the American University in Cairo, the American University of Beirut, and the American University in Sharjah, all of which hold academic accreditation.
Currently, the American University in Kuwait holds six U.S. academic accreditations, including AACSB accreditation for business, ABET accreditation for engineering and computer science, AALE accreditation for humanities programs, CEA accreditation for the Intensive English Program, and NASAD recognition for the graphic design program, alongside accreditation from the Private Universities Council of the State of Kuwait. Obtaining candidacy status from MSCHE enhances the university’s standing and reaffirms its ongoing commitment to achieving the highest standards of quality and international institutional accreditation.

The American University in Kuwait is the first private university in Kuwait focused on the humanities and liberal arts. The university has established its educational, cultural, and administrative standards based on the pedagogical model followed by universities and colleges in the United States, with English as the language of instruction.
