International consultations and communications to de-escalate tensions and support efforts to achieve security, stability, and sustainable peace in the region

Regional and global capitals have intensified their communications and efforts to de-escalate rising tensions in the region, amid calls to return to the memorandum of understanding signed between the United States and Iran.

Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, discussed regional and international developments and the situation in the Middle East during a phone call with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. The Emirates News Agency (WAM) reported that the two sides explored ways to enhance efforts aimed at achieving security, stability, and sustainable peace in the region, in line with the aspirations of its peoples for development and prosperity. The agency added that the call also covered a number of topics of mutual interest related to bilateral relations between the two countries and ways to strengthen them in a manner that serves their mutual interests.

In Cairo, Egyptian Foreign Minister Dr. Badr Abdelatty held talks with U.S. Special Envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff on recent regional developments and the situation in the Middle East. The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a press release that this took place during a phone call during which both sides exchanged views on recent developments in the Middle East against the backdrop of military escalation, within the framework of continuous consultation and coordination between Egypt and the United States.

The statement noted that Minister Abdelatty emphasized Egypt’s support for all efforts aimed at resolving the current crisis through dialogue and diplomatic means, welcoming the progress made through the memorandum of understanding reached between the United States and Iran. He stressed in this regard the necessity of adhering to the memorandum of understanding, which he viewed as a constructive step toward reducing tensions and enhancing security and stability in the region.

For his part, Witkoff appreciated Egypt’s role in supporting efforts to achieve regional stability and the efforts it is making in coordination with relevant parties to encourage dialogue and bridge differences. The statement noted that both sides agreed to continue coordination and consultation in the coming period to serve regional security and stability.

Similarly, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty stressed during a phone call with his Omani counterpart, Badr Al Busaidi, the necessity of de-escalation and avoiding the region’s slide into further tension and an expansion of the conflict. The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a press release that the call addressed the accelerating escalation witnessed in the region and its significant risks to regional security and stability, as well as regional efforts aimed at calming tensions and returning to negotiations.

The statement added that the two ministers emphasized the importance of returning to the path of negotiations and political solutions as the best means to address current crises in the region. They agreed to continue close coordination and consultation in the coming period to support efforts aimed at containing escalation and enhancing security and stability.
