Rare Meteorite Falls in America, Revealing Chemical Evidence and Valuable Information for Scientists

Scientists have revealed the results of a study on a rare meteorite that penetrated a house in New Jersey, United States, after it was observed entering Earth’s atmosphere in July 2024 as a fireball accompanied by a loud sonic boom.

According to Space.com, the meteorite, weighing approximately 50 kilograms, was carefully preserved by the homeowner, allowing researchers to examine it in a nearly pristine state. Analyses conducted by a scientific team at NASA’s Johnson Space Center showed that the sample belongs to a very rare class combining characteristics of CM1 and CM2 meteorites, making it one of the rarest samples ever to reach Earth.

Researchers also detected organic compounds, amino acids, and traces of salts, indicating the presence of saline water on the celestial body from which the meteorite originated. These findings provide new data on the chemical environments present in the early solar system.

The team also successfully traced the meteorite’s trajectory back to a region within the main asteroid belt using camera recordings and radar data.
