Amid the Destruction: Volunteers in Gaza Race Against Time to Save Cultural Heritage

Volunteers in southern Gaza Strip continue efforts to preserve what remains of the cultural heritage by collecting, restoring, and documenting artifacts within a temporary center, amid widespread damage to historical sites during the war.

In a report, the Agence France-Presse noted that volunteers rely on simple tools to clean mosaic pieces and archaeological finds, as well as to digitize historical documents and photographs to protect them from damage or loss. United Nations data indicate that more than 160 historical and cultural sites in the Gaza Strip have been damaged, while the area holds a civilizational legacy spanning thousands of years and has been successively inhabited by various civilizations.

Participants in the initiative emphasize that their goal is to preserve cultural heritage for future generations, despite limited resources and a shortage of specialized equipment.

The efforts also include preserving maps, documents, and historical newspapers from different periods, including the Ottoman era, the British Mandate, and the Egyptian administration, as part of a project to document cultural and archaeological memory.

These initiatives highlight the importance of safeguarding human heritage during crises, by documenting and protecting what can be saved with available resources.
