UNICEF Settles Controversy Over Circulated Image of Messi and Lamine Yamal

UNICEF has put an end to speculation and settled the debate surrounding a widely circulated photo showing Argentine star Lionel Messi with Spanish prodigy Lamine Yamal as an infant, after many believed it was AI-generated or digitally altered. UNICEF issued a statement via its official account on the X platform, confirming that the image is authentic and was taken more than 18 years ago during a charity photo session organized by the organization to raise funds. The agency clarified that the child in the photo is Spanish Lamine Yamal, who was accompanied by his mother, Sheila, and that they met Messi during the photo shoot conducted by Spanish photographer Joan Monfort. It added that both players currently serve as UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors, using their fame and platforms to support and advocate for children’s rights, emphasizing the goal that “every child survives, thrives, and reaches their full potential.”
