Syria and Germany establish the Joint Committee and sign the final air transport agreement between the two countries

The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates and the German Federal Ministry for Foreign Affairs signed yesterday an agreement establishing the Syrian-German Joint Commission, a step that lays the foundation for institutionalizing permanent cooperation between the two countries and strengthening bilateral relations based on shared interests and mutual respect. The Syrian-German Joint Commission held its inaugural session, chaired by Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Asaad Hassan Al-Shaybani and German State Minister for Foreign Affairs Gisa Andreas von Gierke, at Tishrin Palace in Damascus, with the participation of officials and experts from both sides to discuss ways to develop cooperation in several key sectors.

The Commission plays a pivotal role in coordinating bilateral cooperation and monitoring the implementation of understandings in areas such as economic recovery, reconstruction, investment, energy, transport, civil aviation, transitional justice, missing persons, and the refugee file.

The launch of the Commission embodies Syria’s orientation toward building institutional international partnerships that are guided by its national priorities, ensuring the sustainability of cooperation and the realization of mutual interests, thereby serving the aspirations of both the Syrian and German peoples.

In this context, Syria and Germany also signed the final Air Transport Agreement between the two countries. According to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), the Agreement consolidates the legal and regulatory framework for air relations between the two countries and paves the way for transitioning to the implementation phase, which includes completing operational procedures between the civil aviation authorities of both sides, designating air carriers, organizing air transport rights and frequencies, issuing licenses and operational approvals, and fulfilling the necessary technical and security requirements to commence air services between the two countries.
