The General Directorate of Customs thwarted two smuggling attempts involving substances suspected to be psychoactive drugs, via two shipments arriving from the United Kingdom and Canada to the Air Cargo Customs Administration. These separate operations resulted in the arrest of an Indian national, underscoring the vigilance of customs officers and the integrated efforts among relevant agencies in combating smuggling.

In a statement, the General Directorate of Customs said that the first seizure was carried out by inspectors from the Air Cargo Customs Administration, who suspected one of the incoming shipments and subjected it to a thorough inspection. Inside, they found 100 sheets saturated with a substance referred to as “chemical,” with a total weight of approximately 790 grams.

The second seizure followed prior information and investigations conducted by staff from the Customs Research and Investigation Department, which led to the detection of an incoming air cargo shipment. After completing inspection procedures, it was revealed that the shipment contained a parcel of books, with printed sheets saturated with a substance suspected to be “chemical” hidden inside one of them. This represented an innovative smuggling method to conceal substances listed among psychoactive drugs, with the seized materials weighing 2.720 kilograms.

Coordinating with the General Directorate for the Suppression of Narcotics, the suspect was apprehended upon his arrival to collect the shipments. Legal procedures against him are underway, and he will be referred to the competent authorities.

Customs noted that the total seized materials from the two operations amounted to approximately 3.510 kilograms of sheets saturated with the “chemical” substance, including 100 sheets weighing 790 grams, in addition to printed sheets saturated with the same substance weighing 2.720 kilograms.
