"Ghubar al-Azz" (Dust of Glory): Heritage Through a Contemporary Lens

With the commencement of filming for the series “Ghubar al-Azz” (Dust of Honor), Qatari drama enters a new phase of heritage productions. The project is expected to revive this genre after years of absence, benefiting from the support of Qatar Media City and featuring a cast of Gulf stars alongside young Qatari talent, in an experience that blends the authenticity of the story with modern execution.

The significance of “Ghubar al-Azz” extends beyond its historical nature; it is a project aimed at rebuilding the local drama industry through production that relies on natural filming locations, modern visual effects, and a Gulf-based crew combining experience with new generations. This reflects a trend toward presenting works capable of competing in the Gulf and Arab markets.

The title carries connotations beyond its literal meaning. “Dust” is associated with the desert environment, travel, and battlefields, while “Honor” symbolizes dignity, chivalry, and the status that Gulf people have cherished throughout their history. The name combines these two meanings to convey a message that glory is born only after challenges, and that authentic values are the true legacy that endures regardless of changing times.

The work is based on a dramatic story by writer Talal Al-Dosari, set within a historical space inspired by the Gulf environment, where the lives of the sea and the desert intersect. It highlights the human and social relationships that united the people of both regions, within an epic framework addressing courage, solidarity, freedom, and loyalty, without documenting a specific historical event.

A key strength of the project is its production scale, featuring more than 100 dramatic characters. It includes actors from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Jordan, alongside a prominent presence of Qatari artists. This step reflects a commitment to providing opportunities for local talents to participate in large-scale productions and to benefit from Gulf expertise across all stages of execution.

The project also relies on visuals as a major attraction. Filming locations were chosen in the Zakheret and Dukan reserves, as well as several desert and coastal areas, for their natural landscapes that give the events a visual depth appropriate to the era in which the story is set. A significant portion of the costumes, accessories, and sets were executed to preserve the identity of the Gulf environment.

Modern technologies were not absent from the project. “Ghubar al-Azz” combines realistic execution with visual effects and artificial intelligence for scenes that are difficult to film, such as naval battles, ship sinkings, and crowd scenes, while maintaining the work’s realistic tone. This reflects a trend toward leveraging technology to serve drama without affecting its heritage identity.

The series is written by Talal Al-Dosari, directed by Mohammed Al-Tuwaila, and produced by Cast for Artistic Production, with executive producer Mohammed Anwar, supported by Qatar Media City. It stars Salah Al-Mulla, Nasser Mohammed, Mohammed Anwar, Faisal Rashid, Munther Rayyaneh, Naif Al-Dhafiri, Amira Al-Sharif, Khalid Turki, Ahmed Abdullah, and others, bringing the total number of dramatic characters to 107.
