Treason is a stigma on the brow of the traitor
Treachery means breaking one’s pledge and betraying trust; it is the antithesis of loyalty. Among its various forms, the gravest is treason against the homeland, as it constitutes an explicit breach of the social contract and an erosion of moral values. It is contrary to ethics and religiously prohibited. The undeniable truth is that treason against one’s country does not expire with time nor fade from collective memory. Whoever betrays his homeland sells his dignity and loses all worth in the eyes of people. The Holy Quran clearly states that espionage and cooperation with those who plot against the nation are traits of the hypocrites who seek to undermine security. In this regard, Allah, the Exalted, says: “O you who have believed, do not take My enemies and your enemies as allies, extending to them affection…” (Surah Al-Mumtahanah, 1). He also says: “O you who have believed, do not betray Allah and the Messenger or betray your trusts while you know [the consequences]” (Surah Al-Anfal, 27). Whoever subjects himself to disgrace invites a stigma that pursues him in this world and the Hereafter; his name will always be associated with shame. How beautiful are the words of Ibn al-Rumi:
I have sworn by my homeland that I will never sell it,
Nor allow another to rule it for all eternity.
I entrusted it in the prime of youth, a blessing
Like the blessing of a people who now dwell in its shade.
The soul has grown accustomed to it, as if it were
Its very body; if separated, it would perish.
And the desires that youth fulfilled in those lands
Have made men love their homelands.
When they mention their homelands, they recall
The pledges of youth made there, and thus yearn for them.
Therefore, defend your homelands with all your might, and love your homelands as you love yourselves and your families. Clinging to one’s homeland is a religious and moral obligation. Remember how our ancestors sacrificed for the sake of the nation, building this proud homeland with the same pride as its people.
Stay safe.
