Psychiatric Clinics and Societal Perceptions
In recent times, we have all witnessed significant development in Kuwait’s health sector across medical, technical, and administrative levels, which has positively impacted people’s lives. This progress is due to the facilitations provided through large-scale expansions and the construction of new hospitals using modern, advanced methods comparable to global medical centers that conduct research and studies, in addition to offering distinguished medical care and performing major and complex surgeries. This development indicates that Kuwait has long placed great emphasis on healthcare, providing high-quality health services to citizens and residents alike.
As the state expanded and the population spread across the country, from north to south, the government succeeded in establishing comprehensive medical centers that receive patients and visitors around the clock. The recent opening of psychiatric clinics in health centers represents a qualitative leap, albeit not the last one, aimed at reducing congestion and easing the burden on people. However, a challenge remains in patients’ acceptance of visiting such clinics due to the sensitivity surrounding them and societal perceptions. It is worth noting that these services are provided free of charge, unlike private clinics where some providers charge high fees, exploiting patients’ preference for privacy and confidentiality.
Today, life is not as easy as in the past, given developments, changes, and progress in many fields, modern technology, and the spread of diseases and epidemics such as coronavirus, as well as wars, disasters, accidents, and crises. Together, these factors create psychological pressure, depression, and anxiety, which in turn affect people’s lives and generate numerous obstacles.
In the United States and European countries, people visit psychiatric clinics as naturally as they visit other clinics across various specialties. This reflects a high level of cultural awareness. Undoubtedly, every human being, regardless of social status, is affected by life circumstances and needs support to overcome many psychological challenges. Therefore, negative attitudes toward others must change, and we should not force those in need of treatment to isolate themselves out of fear of societal judgment, as this prolongs their recovery.
The government’s health role is remarkable and evident, exemplified by the Ministry of Health and its proactive minister, who has corrected many distortions and brought about tangible changes in healthcare concepts. This has enabled Kuwait to surpass regional, Arab, and perhaps even global standards. For any health project to succeed before implementation, it is essential to provide comprehensive publicity through various media, including social media, and to clarify the importance of these clinics and how to interact with them.
O God, heal every patient and clothe everyone in health and well-being.
