Widespread fires threaten one of France's most famous forests... Authorities intensify containment efforts

French authorities continue their intensive operations to contain widespread fires that broke out in the Fontainebleau Forest, one of the most prominent natural destinations near the capital, Paris, amid a new heatwave that is sweeping the country and complicating firefighting efforts. According to the French News Agency (AFP), hundreds of firefighters, supported by specialized aerial firefighting aircraft, have been deployed to curb the spread of the flames. The fires, which started on Sunday, have consumed approximately 2,050 hectares of forest. French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez confirmed that the fire is no longer spreading but still requires full containment to prevent it from reigniting. Authorities noted that improved weather conditions and reduced wind speeds have contributed to enhancing the efforts of firefighting teams. The fires have forced around 1,000 people to evacuate their homes in the vicinity of Fontainebleau town, while authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the blaze, arresting six individuals suspected of involvement in deliberate arson. These developments come as France has recorded the burning of approximately 32,000 hectares of land since the beginning of the year, a figure that underscores the growing impact of heatwaves on this year’s fire season.
