Invention of a Smart Robot for Remote Eye Surgeries

Dr. Khaled Al-Subaiti, a consultant in ophthalmology and retinal surgery, announced the invention of a smart, specialized robotic system for remote eye surgeries, which is the first of its kind worldwide. The device was developed in collaboration with Eng. Mishari Al-Jandal and with support from the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences.

Speaking to KUNA, Dr. Al-Subaiti said that the device, named “Rebotec,” enables surgeons to perform precise online procedures and allows multiple surgeons from different countries to participate in the same operation through advanced communication technologies, thereby enhancing medical cooperation and leveraging global expertise.

He explained that the innovation also includes a robotic nurse designed to support the surgical team and manage various tasks within the operating room, thereby improving the efficiency of medical procedures. He added that the system employs artificial intelligence to support surgeons’ decision-making, reduce errors, and maintain consistent precision throughout the operation.

Dr. Al-Subaiti noted that “Rebotec” represents a forward-looking vision for advancing eye surgeries, with ongoing research and development aimed at achieving clinical applications that benefit patients worldwide. He pointed out that “Rebotec” was first presented as a research concept at a global conference on retinal surgery in the United States, where it received widespread acclaim from physicians and researchers around the world, who regarded it as a promising step toward the future of eye surgery.
