Solar power becomes Europe's largest source of electricity

An analysis by the Imperial College London Centre for Energy Policy (Imperial CEPE) showed that solar power became the single largest source of electricity generation in the European Union last month, producing around 25% of the EU’s total electricity output. The Imperial CEPE noted that solar’s share of electricity generation in EU member states in June surpassed that of nuclear power, which accounted for 21% of the EU’s total electricity production, as well as natural gas at 15%, wind power at 14%, hydropower at 12%, and coal at 8%. This marks only the third time that solar power has topped the list of electricity generation sources in the EU, following May 2026 and June 2025, according to the German news agency Deutsche Presse-Agentur (dpa). This record figure reflects the rapid growth of solar energy projects in the 27-member EU over the past five years, when solar accounted for just 10% of the EU’s electricity generation in June 2021.
