Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani: Architect of Modern Qatar's Renaissance

Qatar has lost a sister nation with the passing of the late, may God have mercy on him, His Highness the Amir, the late Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, a distinguished leader who gave much to his country and people. His Highness the late Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani is considered one of the most prominent Arab leaders who left a clear imprint on the history of the Gulf states and the Arab world. During his reign from 1995 to 2013, he succeeded in transforming Qatar from a small oil-dependent emirate into an influential regional and international power in politics, economy, media, and sports.

He possessed an early strategic vision, recognizing that true wealth lies not merely in resources, but in how they are invested to serve humanity and build the future. He focused on developing the liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry, placing Qatar at the top of the list of the world’s largest gas exporters. Simultaneously, he launched major projects in infrastructure, education, and health, and established the Qatar Investment Authority to serve as the state’s economic arm in global markets.

In the media sphere, the decision to launch Al Jazeera channel in 1996 marked a turning point in Arab media, offering a new model for freedom of opinion and event coverage. In the sports arena, his vision placed Qatar on the map of major global events, culminating in hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup, making it the first in the Middle East.

However, the most distinctive feature of the late, may God have mercy on him, His Highness the Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani’s era was his civilized style of governance. In 2013, he surprised the world with his historic decision to voluntarily hand over power to his son, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. This was the first peaceful transfer of power of its kind in the region, sending a profound message about selflessness and prioritizing the national interest over any personal consideration.

His Highness’s contributions were not limited to domestic affairs; he was present in supporting Arab, Islamic, and humanitarian causes through the Qatar Fund for Development and charitable institutions, emphasizing that the strength of nations is measured by their positive impact on their surroundings.

Today, more than a decade after he handed over the reins of power to His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad, the Amir of the State of Qatar, the achievements of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani remain evident. He laid the foundations upon which Qatar now operates: a diversified economy, active diplomacy, and a notable global presence.

May God have mercy on Qatar’s and the Gulf, Arab, and Islamic peoples’ late, may God have mercy on him, His Highness the Amir, the late Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. May He protect Qatar, its Amir, and its people, and perpetuate upon the Gulf states the blessings of security, stability, and wise leadership.
