Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa: The Leader Who Built a National Renaissance and Left an Enduring Legacy
With the passing of the late, may God have mercy on him, His Highness the Amir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the State of Qatar and the Arab world have lost one of the leading figures who had a clear impact on the path of development and renaissance over the past decades. He led the State of Qatar from 1995 to 2013, before handing over power to His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Amir of the State of Qatar, in a move regarded as a rare example of smooth transition of power in the region.
During his years of leadership, Qatar witnessed significant transformation across various fronts. He contributed to building a modern economy based on investment and diversification of income sources, launched massive development projects, supported the education and health sectors, and enhanced his country’s standing at both the regional and international levels. Among the most notable milestones of his era were the adoption of Qatar’s permanent constitution and the launch of Qatar National Vision 2030, which laid the foundations for sustainable development and the construction of a knowledge-based economy, alongside consolidating Qatar’s presence in diplomacy, sports, and media.
Regarding relations with the State of Kuwait, they were characterized by close fraternal ties and continuous cooperation. The late His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani was keen on strengthening bonds of love and coordination between the two countries, and supporting the progress of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (GCC). He believed that unity among Gulf states and joint cooperation are the basis for stability and prosperity. During his era, Kuwaiti-Qatari relations witnessed further convergence and coordination in various political, economic, and humanitarian fields.
His footprint was not limited to internal development, but extended to humanitarian work and support for mediation and dialogue efforts, which earned him respect and appreciation at both the Arab and international levels, and linked his name to a pivotal phase in the modern history of the State of Qatar.
Today, amid the sorrowful feelings that followed the announcement of the death of Prince Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, a career full of giving and achievement comes to mind, along with a legacy that will remain present in the memory of Qataris and all who knew his journey.
With hearts believing in God’s decree and destiny, we extend our deepest condolences and sincere sympathies to His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Amir of the sisterly State of Qatar, to the noble ruling family, and to the brotherly Qatari people, on the passing of the late, may God have mercy on him, His Highness the Amir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. May God have mercy on him and grant him a spacious place in Paradise.
